Reverse Osmosis membranes and other membrane systems need periodic cleaning and servicing. For optimal performance specific chemical cleaning RO are required, depending on the cause of the pollution.

FloChem RO 1 (Low pH Membrane Cleaner)

Direction for use Chemical Cleaning RO

FloChem RO-1 should be mixed in a cleaning tank equipped with a mechanical mixer, low pressure recirculation pump, and cartridge or bag filter.

This cleaner works best when applied at a temperature of 40o-45oC, a pH of 2.5 to 3.5, and at a flow rate of 8-10 gpm per 4” pressure tube or 30-40 gpm per 8” pressure tube at a pressure of between 20-50 psi. Dilute 1 to 10 with RO Permeate water or DI water.  

Check and adjust the pH if necessary. Add Ammonium Hydroxide to increase the pH and add more FloChem RO-1  to decrease the pH. Recirculation solution for 1 hour checking pH regularly. 

Shut down pump and soak for 1 hour. After soak, recirculation for an additional 20 minutes and then rinse.

General Description

FloChem RO-1  is an acidic liquid with specific gravity at 25° c 1.22 + 0.02

 

Principle Uses

For the removal of iron and metal hydroxide fouling and calcium carbonate scale.

Features

FloChem chemical celaning RO-1  removes calcium carbonate scale and metal hydroxide colloids without damaging sensitive polyamide composite membrane elements.

It is to be used after the system shows a sign of performance loss or as a preventative cleaning. 

FloChem RO-1 should be the first step in any cleaning regime.

Handling & Safety

FloChem RO-1 is a fuming liquid and special care should be taken on handling the concentrated form, please handled with care. Avoid contact with eye, skin or clothing. In case of accidental splash – flush with plenty of water. In case of eye contact, obtain medical attention as a safety measure.

FloChem RO 2 (High pH Membrane Cleaner)

FloChem RO-2 should be mixed in a cleaning tank equipped with a mechanical mixer, low pressure recirculation pump, and cartridge or bag filter. 

This cleaner works best when applied at a temperature of 40o-45oC, a pH of 11.5, and at a flow rate of 8-10 gpm per 4” pressure tube or 30-40 gpm per 8” pressure tube at a pressure of between 20-50 psi. 

For silica fouling, use at pH of 12. Use caution as pH of above 12 may damage membrane elements. Consult your membrane manufacturer for acceptable pH cleaning range. Dilute 1 part FloChem RO-2  to 10 parts RO Permeate water or DI water.  Check and adjust the pH if necessary. Add Sulfuric or Hydrochloric Acid to decrease the pH and add more FloChem RO-2 to increase the pH. Recirculate solution for 1 hour checking pH regularly. Shut down pump and soak for 1 hour. After soak, recirculate for an additional 20 minutes and then rinse.

Description

FloChem RO-2 is an alkaline liquid with specific gravity at 25° c of 1.16 + 0.02. 

 

Principle Uses

For the removal of biological, organic and colloidal fouling in Polyamide Composite Membrane Systems. It is also effective for removal of emulsified oils and silica.

FloChem RO-2  removes biological, organic and colloidal foulants without damaging sensitive polyamide composite membrane elements.

FloChem RO-3 (Biomate For Reverse Osmosis)

General Product Information

FloChem RO-3 is used to reduce slime that grows inside RO Membrane, Ultra Filtration (UF). Treatment programmed for this uses a combination of FloChem RO-3, FloChem RO-1 or FloChem RO-2. This programmed will also reduce the frequency of cleaning.

FloChem RO-3  offers a number of benefits as follows:

  1. Effective in reducing slime that grows in membrane system.
  2. Formulated especially to ensure compatibility with the following membrane types: Polyamide Thin Film Composite, Poly Sulfone and PVDF.
  3. Optimal result is achieved only if treatment programmed is carried out for 30minutes every week.

Physical Properties

Appearance:  Clear – amber liquid

specific gravity at 25 ºc  : 1.04 +  0.02

pH: 4.0  +  0.5

If there is a sharp decrease in storage temperature, this product will become opaque due to a resulting precipitation. If this occurs, apply heat to the product and stir.

Corrosivity

The recommended material for application of FloChem  Biomate are non-metallic tanks such as polyethylene, polypropylene, Saran TM and Teflon TM. Components for pumps are SS316, Kynar TM, Teflon TM, CPE TM and Viton TM. 

Potable Application

FloChem  Biomate  is able to produce potable water quality if the resulting permeate is disposed during the application of FloChem  Biomate. 

After treatment using FloChem  Biomate, the permeate has to be disposed until analysis   shows that the permeate is clean. Contact FloChem RO representative for analysis procedure.

 

Direction of Application

The amount of time required for FloChem  Biomate  treatment is only 30 minutes per week for RO membrane system. The product is injected to the RO stream during system operation. For heavily contaminated systems, Hydro Biomate is best used with in CIP following the use of FloChem RO-1 and FloChem RO-2

Procedure for increasing on-line FloChem  Biomate  is as follows:

  1. Calculate the amount of FloChem  Biomate  required in ml/minute.
  2. Dispose the stream of permeate before the start of injection.
  3. Inject the FloChem  Biomate to the stream of water RO for 30 minutes.
  4. After 30 minutes, stop injection and continue to dispose the stream of permeate for 15 minutes.
  5. System membrane is able to operate back to normal.

Procedure for Cleaning In Place (CIP) using FloChem  Biomate  is as follows:

  1. Place system membrane with valve inside CIP.
  2. Fill cleaning tank with permeate water or demin. Increase FloChem  Biomate  with dosage of 1 % towards total system volume (membrane, pipe, cartridge filter and tank).
  3. Circulate the FloChem  Biomate solution for 45 minutes.
  4. Stop circulation after 45 minutes and flush the system using chlorinated water.
